The Oils Room, Essential Oils for Moms and the Importance of Self-Care
By: Christa Teevan – Founder of The Oils Room
I grew up in Minnesota and moved to New Jersey in my late 20’s where I currently live with my husband, our two amazing kids, Matt (14) and Emma (12), and two crazy pugs. I love to cook. Red wine and dark chocolate…enough said. Favorite way to wind down on a Friday? Family game night with cards and old school board games. I I love being outside, yoga, pilates and am a big believer in meditation, gratitude and the power of positive thinking.
I work for an investment bank in NYC and am an essential oil educator…yes, I know, it may seem like a strange combination, but first and foremost, I am a mom, and keeping my family happy and healthy is most important to me. When I was introduced to doTERRA over 4 years ago, it was one of those “aha” moments.
I’ve always led a pretty active, healthy-ish lifestyle, but my journey into natural health really started after I had my son. I’d been hearing more and more about the long-term side effects being linked to various chemicals and synthetics in medicine cabinet, personal care and cleaning products as well as concerns around the overuse of antibiotics in our country. I began paying more attention to labels and started taking a more conservative approach to medications.
When I discovered essential oils, it was like finding the missing piece I’d been looking for. I had this whole new set of tools that gave me such a sense of empowerment in terms of being able to reduce toxins and synthetics and support our health naturally.
But the best part? The fact that my kids learn right along with me. They pay attention to what they put in and on their bodies now. It’s so amazing to see that their natural instinct is to reach for an oil first when looking for support for headaches, a sore throat, emotions and so much more. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely believe there is a time and place for western medicine and I’m so thankful we have that option, but I believe in a more integrative approach and looking at wellness as a lifestyle. Why not blend the best of both worlds?
There was no way I could keep the benefits I’d been seeing to myself. I started sharing with family and friends, which eventually led to opening The Oils Room to reach even more people. I truly believe that everyone, from babies to grandparents, can benefit from essential oils. Being an entrepreneur, doing something that I’m passionate about, has given me so much to be grateful for. I have the privilege of working with so many amazing women and families who I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Being able to help them improve their family’s health and wellness, but also to provide the opportunity to make additional income doing something they believe in has been an amazing gift.
Thank you for having me as a guest in the momsspecialtoo community. You are all such an inspiration. I’ve read many of your stories and am in awe of you and your amazing children. So, I wanted to take this time to honor you. I’ve worked with so many moms and there is a common theme when I ask them what they are struggling with – stress, lack of sleep, low energy and no time for self-care. As moms, we give so much of our ourselves to others, but then feel guilty about taking even just 15 minutes to relax and have a little alone time. Somewhere along the way we formed a belief that self-care equals self-ish. Or maybe we view it as being weak, we want to be Wonder Woman and do it all…we shouldn’t need a break and the minute we fall short, we feel like we’ve failed.
This couldn’t be further from the truth. How many times have you snapped at someone or not had the energy to enjoy the time with your kids because you were exhausted or stressed? Being the best mom, partner, friend…means taking care of yourself first. Be THAT example for your kids. Don’t let them grow up learning those same limiting beliefs. Show them that choosing to take care of yourself is ok.
You are all amazing moms. You are strong. You are doing the best that you can. You DESERVE happiness and to feel good about yourself. It’s time to let those beliefs go.
To help you create some new rituals to treat yourself, I’ve put together a list of my top 5 essential oils for women along with some of my favorite self-care ideas.
Self Care Ideas:
Schedule it in your calendar just like you would any other activity. Remember, self-care is not an indulgence, it’s a necessity.
*Take a walk outside. Inhale the fresh air, feel the sunshine on your face, listen to the birds. Smile.
*Meditate for 15 minutes in a quiet place without interruptions.
*Take a bath (cup of tea or glass of wine optional).
*Read a book or listen to a podcast that will inspire you.
*Take a yoga class.
*Meet up with a friend for lunch.
*Cook your favorite recipe.
*Spend 10 minutes writing down everything you’re grateful for. Don’t think, just write. There are no wrong answers.
*Before you go to sleep, congratulate yourself for everything you accomplished that day (even it was just taking a shower, it still counts!)
*Take a nap.
*Paint, color, draw, sketch (stick figures are ok too).
*Put on your favorite music and dance like no one’s watching.
*Order take out.
